Died on this day in 1074 or 1076 (wikipedia claims that there is confusion over they year but not the date, OK then) aged 55 King Sweyn II of Denmark (my toy, wikipedia). Grandson of Sweyn who was briefly King of England (father of Cnut who was more convincingly King of England, or at least bits of it). He had to fight for the Danish throne, which was also claimed by Harald Hardrada; eventually it was settled so Hardrada got Norway and Sweyn Denmark, after Hardrada was defeated at Stamford bridge Sweyn mounted an invasion in alliance with Edgar Aetheling (grandson of King Edmund Ironside) but only got as far as York before taking money from William to give up.

Born on this day in 1442 to Richard Plantagenet and Cecily Neville, King Edward IV of England (my toy, wikipedia). Richard was descended from Edward III's son Lionel, through a daughter, and also from Edward's son Edmund; which Henry VI descended from Edward's son John. Lionel was older than John, Edmund younger. Salic law ought not apply, but Henry IV had taken the throne from Richard II through force, so Henrys V and VI presumably felt it was rightly theirs. Richard may not have disagreed so strongly if Henry VI wasn't useless as King due to (poorly specified) illness. Anyway Richard never got to be King, because he died fighting. His son Edward inherited his claim and managed to actually succeed at fighting and then he was overthrown in favour of the (still ill) Henry VI, and then he won again and this time both Henry VI and his son Edward were killed (Edward at Tewksbury, Henry in London (perhaps of natural causes, perhaps not)). Edward married Elizabeth Woodville in secret although not secret *enough* to pretend it never happened, and had her crowned Queen - the first commoner to be crowned as Queen - and had 10 children with her.
