Meme! (words for things)





Age: 26
Where you grew up (Ages 0-18):Chelmsford, Essex (with a Scottish mother)

1. A body of water, smaller than a river, contained within relatively narrow banks: Stream. Or creek. Or brook.

2. What the thing you push around the grocery store is called: Trolley

3. A metal container to carry a meal in: Lunch box.

4. The thing that you cook bacon and eggs in: Frying pan.

5. The piece of furniture that seats three people: Sofa. Or couch. Or setee.

6. The device on the outside of the house that carries rain off the roof: gutter + drain pipe

7. The covered area outside a house where people sit in the evening: Patio. Or verandah. Or deck. Or garden. Depending on what it is made of and stuff.

8. Carbonated, sweetened, non-alcoholic beverages: I didn't grow up with a word for this class of drinks. I know 'soda' and 'pop' but I generally think of the drinks as having individual names. Or possibly 'poison' (since I have ishoes with aspartame).

9. A flat, round breakfast food served with syrup: Pancakes. Although they aren't a breakfast food.

10. A long sandwich designed to be a whole meal in itself: Baguette. or sub.

11. The piece of clothing worn by men at the beach: Trunks.

12. Shoes worn for sports: Trainers.

13. Putting a room in order: Tidying up.

14. A flying insect that glows in the dark: Firefly

15. The little insect that curls up into a ball: I dunno.

16. The children's playground equipment where one kid sits on one side and goes up while the other sits on the other side and goes down: see-saw

17. How do you eat your pizza:Pizza cutter and my fingers. But I'll use a knife if there isn't a pizza cutter.

18. What's it called when private citizens put up signs and sell their used stuff: They don't do that where I come from

19. What's the evening meal?: Tea if early, Dinner if late, Supper if late and very informal.

20. The thing under a house where the furnace and perhaps a rec room are: Basement or Cellar but mostly something that people don't have in Essex, and if they did they probably wouldn't put a 'rec room' in it (more likely storage of junk, or possibly wine).

21. What do you call the thing from which you can drink water in public places: Drinking fountain.

Main difference I have to you is that I use 'beck' almost as often as 'stream' - or did as a kids. I do call fizzy drinks pop. And I know that woodlice curl up in balls :)

We don't really have porches/verandahs in the UK much do we? More likely a conservatory with walls not just a roof :) Oh and people might have a garage sale occasionally, but not usually a yard sale, because people with room to sell things like that have gardens rather than yards.

I'd probably have a cellar rather than basement if I had such a thing, but usually have lofts (for storage) rather than an attic (which might have rooms in).
