Died on this day in 1701 aged 67 King James VII of Scotland & II of England (my toy, wikipedia). Scandalised the country by marrying a commoner (Anne Hyde) after his brother Charles was restored to the throne. James converted to Catholicism, which was extremely unpopular and King Charles insisted that his daughters (Mary and Anne) be raised as Protestants. After the death of his first wife James married Mary of Modena, an Italian Catholic. A Catholic king was so unpopular that Parliament basically invited William the Orange (and his wife Mary, James' daughter) to invade from the Netherlands.

Born on this day in 1627 to Frederick V Elector Palatine and Elizabeth Stuart, the Winter Queen, Philip of the Palatinate (my toy, wikipedia). Grandson of James VI and I. Born in exile in the Hague, Philip never got to live in the Palatinate. After killing a man in a duel (or possibly 'just' a fight) he became a mercenary and fought for the Duke of Lorraine.

Also meeeeee. (I'm not in the database though). Floppy smurfday to me. I am a power of 2.

Hoppy birdy! Are you "the" orange too, or merely "an" orange or just "of" Orange? :-)

I get the impression that Parliament was prepared to put up with James' Catholicity so long as he would be succeeded by his Protestant daughter. It was the birth of a son, who would be raised as Catholic from birth, which triggered the Glorious Revolution.

I also get the impression that James VII/II was what we'd call today religiously tolerant. The country's attitude to this at the time is not exactly a proud moment in British history.

And happy birthday to you. You could add yourself to the database by marrying into royalty, but I wouldn't recommend it.

I could dig until I find out how I'm descended from Alfred the Cake; I probably am, somehow. But I've no incentive to do the digging. I don't think marrying royalty would be very fun.

I think Parliament might have even put up with a Catholic dynasty if it hadn't been one that kept trying to sell the country out to the Bourbons in order to re-establish absolute rule. You can certainly praise the Stuarts for their attitude towards religious toleration, less so for their continued belief in Divine Right.
