Also count of Holland and Zeeland, William married the sister of the King of France and another of his daughters married the Holy Roman Emperor. So he was doing rather well for himself diplomatically.
Born on this day in 1502 to King Manuel I of Portugal and Maria of Aragon, King John III of Portugal (my toy,wikipedia). Father of Maria who was the first of Philip II of Spain's 4 wives. John expanded Portugese power in India and invaded Brazil, under his rule Portugal also contacted China, the first Europeans to do so.
