Sep. 6th, 2015 05:12 pmDied on this day in 1511 aged 56 William Julich-Heimbach IV, Duke of Julich-Berg (my toy, wikipedia). Grandfather of Anne of Cleves, wife of Henry VIII. William concluded the Klever Union with John II, Duke of Cleves, in which the union of the Duchy of Jülich-Berg and the Duchy of Cleves-Mark was planned. William had only one five-year-old daughter, Maria, who was promised in marriage to John II's six-year-old son John III. They married in 1510. Obviously selling your children to seal diplomatic deals was *totally reasonable*.
Born on this day in 1610 to Alfonso III, Duke of Modena and Isabella of Savoy, Francesco Este I, Duke d'Este (my toy, wikipedia). Grandfather of Maria, wife of James VII & II. Lived through a plague that claimed the lives of 70% of Modena's population, he then fought in the 30 years war on the side of Spain. Francesco was immortalized by Bernini in a sculpture made around 1650–1651 (Este Gallery and Museum, Modena). It culminates the master sculptor's revolution in portraiture; however wikipedia lacks a picture of it.
