Died on this day in 1435 aged 46 John of Lancaster , 1st Duke of Bedford (my toy,wikipedia). Son of Henry IV. After the death of his elder brother Henry V John and his younger brother Humphrey argued about who would get to be regent for the infant Henry VI; John was declared regent but Humphrey did much of the actual regenting while John was fighting in France. John was doing quite well at "fighting the French" until Joan of Arc showed up, but eventually he defeated her and had her executed. John's second wife was Jacquetta of Luxembourg, who would later remarry and become the mother of Elizabeth Woodville (wife of Edward IV).

Born on this day in 1401 to King Henry III of Castile and Catherine of Lancaster, Maria of Castile (my toy,wikipedia). Grand-daughter of John of Gaunt. Maria was married to the King of Aragon, and spent many years as his regent in Aragon while he was off fighting to secure the crown of Naples.
