Oct. 26th, 2015 04:47 pmOops, busy weekend.
Died on Saturday in 1537 aged 29 Jane Seymour (my toy, wikipedia). Wife of Henry VIII. In contrast to Anne Boleyn Jane was not very educated and was generally considered meek. She tried to reconcile Henry with his daughter Mary, and get her back in the succession (she failed, but Catherine Parr would later succeed) and got her brothers good positions at court. And she gave Henry the long awaited son, but tragically died in the effort - the perfect wife then; meek, obedient, provider-of-heir, and dead before she could do anything to annoy Henry. Henry was later buried beside Jane.
Born on Saturday in 1503 to King Manuel I of Portugal and Maria of Aragon, Isabella of Portugal (my toy, wikipedia). Mother of Philip II of Spain who married (among others) Mary I of England. Isabella was married to Charles V, who was Emperor of a huge amount of territory, she was frequently left as Regent in Spain while he was off dealing with his other territories.
Died yesterday in 1415 aged 42 Edward York , 2nd of York (my toy, wikipedia). Grandson of Edward III. Also a large number of other people - 25/10/1415 was the battle of Agincourt, where Henry V defeated a much larger French army because English Archers Are Great, but it didn't lead to Henry reconquering the whole of France. Wikipedia has more detail https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Agincourt
Born yesterday in 1102 to Robert Curthose and Sybilla of Conversano, William Clito (my toy, wikipedia). Grandson of William the Conqueror.
Died on this day in 899 aged 50 King Alfred the Great (my toy, wikipedia). According to at least some people the first King of England, although that's not entirely clear. Conquered much of England anyway. The thing with the cakes is probably not true, but it's funny anyway.
Born on this day in 1628 to Frederick Prince of Orange and Amalia of Solms-Braunfels, Henriette of Nassau (my toy, wikipedia). Tragically died as an infant, does not merit her own wiki page. Sister of William III.
