Died on this day in 939 aged 46 King Aethelstan (my toy, wikipedia). Modern historians regard him as the first King of England (so not Alfred then, Aethelstan was Alfred's grandson). In 934, apparently reasonably secure in his control of England he invaded Scotland, in alliance with 4 Welsh Kings. This apparently didn't work out so well. Later he defeated the Irish.

Born on this day in 1401 to King Charles VI of France and Isabeau of Bavaria, Catherine of Valois (my toy, wikipedia). Wife of Henry V, also wife of Owen Tudor (in series, not parallel). By her first marriage she was mother of Henry VI and by her second marriage she was the grandmother of Henry VII. Henry V died (of dysentery, on campaign in France) leaving her a widow and the infant Henry VI king without ever seeing his son. Owen Tudor was (probably) the keeper of her household as dowager Queen; it isn't clear whether they actually *married* (he said they did, which for regular people would probably have been sufficient proof) or whether such a marriage would be *legal* (the Queen Dowager was not meant to re-marry without the King's consent, and the King was a child so couldn't give consent), in any case they had 6 children together. After her death Owen was arrested for illegally marrying the Queen Dowager, but was later freed and lived long enough to be executed by the Yorkists.
