Grandson of John of Gaunt (son of Edward III); brother of Henry the Navigator who made many expeditions to the West coast of Africa. Edward made a mess of trying to take the city of Tangier for Portugal.
Born on this day in 1162 to King Henry II of England and Eleanor of Aquitaine, Eleanor of England (my toy,wikipedia). Daughter of Henry II. Married the King of Castile when she was 15. Eleanor took particular interest in supporting religious institutions. In 1179, she took responsibility to support and maintain a shrine to St. Thomas Becket in the cathedral of Toledo.
