Died on this day in 1595 aged 65 Ferdinand II, Archduke of Austria (my toy,wikipedia). Great grand son of Ferdinand and Isabella, parents of Catherine, first wife of Henry VIII. Ferdinand married a commoner secretly and morganetically. He collected a lot of art, and spent rather more money than he had on it.

Born on this day in 1777 Emmanuel von Mensdorff-Pouilly (my toy,wikipedia). Husband of Sophie, sister of Victoria, mother of Queen Victoria. Emmanuel was an officer in the Prussian army, and fought against Napoleon.

Voyage of the Basilisk. Dragons! A round-the-world trip on a sailing ship (just like Charles Darwin!) Dragons! Excitement, peril, SCIENCE (of dragons), etc. I am very much enjoying these books (don't start here).

The Lie Tree. I heard good things, so now I am reading it. But I've only just started, so no opinion yet.
