William had a long career as a courtier, holding many positions. He was a friend of Cromwell (of Wolf Hall fame...).
Born on this day in 1682 William VIII, Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel (my toy,wikipedia). Father of Frederick who married Mary, daughter of George II. William was his father's 7th son, but for some reason inherited anyway (one of his older brothers was too busy being King of Sweden, I expect the others died).
