books books books
Aug. 26th, 2009 11:52 amI read a lot of books :)
Diane Duane: Rihanssu series (5 novels, Star Trek TOS)
I really like these books; Duane fleshes out the universe much better than the series ever really did. Apart from culture-building stuff with the Romulans that forms the focus for the novels she writes the Enterprise with a much more multi-species crew than was ever shown on the TV, and the Federation as much more about tolerance and getting along and such. Plus she can write. For doubleplusgood points there are two very brief mentions of tribbles, which is just enough tribble for *squeeee* TRIBBLE but not enough to take over (OK, I have a tribble obsession).
EW Barber: Women's Work: The First 20, 000 Years - Women, Cloth and Society in Early Times
Which is about spinning and weaving and the history/archaeology thereof. I don't know enough to know how accurate it is, but it's interesting to find someone writing (accessibly) about what women did in ancient societies when so much is about what men did.
Julia Ecklar: The Kobayashi Maru (Star Trek TOS)
This one reads a lot more like fanfic than the Duane; but it was short and amusing. Much Much Much better cheat than the one shown in the new film.
Fast Ships, Black Sails
SF/F pirate stories. YARR! An Excellent Collection.
Catherynne Valente: Palimpsest
Defies description (by me, I'm sure other people have managed). I really liked this; compelling characters and lovely prose. Perhaps a bit sexually explicit for some (I wouldn't lend it to my parents; and it's probably not suitable for young children).
