naathDied on this day in 1718 aged 59 Maria (Mary) of Modena (my toy,wikipedia). Wife of James VII and II. Her marriage to the King was not popular (she was Catholic) and there was controversy about the birth of her son (it was claimed he had been smuggled in, and wasn't hers, this is unlikely to be true), unhappiness with James' Catholic tendencies lead to the Glorious Revolution and James and Mary lived the rest of their lives in exile in France. Mary was not much involved in politics.
Born on this day in 1767 to King Frederick II of Prussia and Elisabeth of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel, Princess Frederica of Prussia (my toy,wikipedia). Daughter-in-law of George III, also a great-great-grand-daughter of George I (so her husband's 3rd cousin (also George III's)). Her parents (Frederick and Elisabeth) were double first cousins - which means that their parents were two siblings who had married two siblings, and also that she had only 4 grand parents (also they didn't get on at all well). She had no children with the Duke of York, and separated (but did not get officially divorced) from him and lived eccentrically with her animals. Her husband and father were both Fredericks, and she was a Frederica... I think Frederick was a very popular name in the 18th century in Germany.
